Basil the Boxer Blog!: 2014

Yesterday as I drove up the Stagecoach Road in Dublin, California, I saw several young men in their late 20's to early 30's standing outside of condo complexes all with beards, crappy t-shirts, and cigarettes. Not that I wear the best quality t-shirts, but I am thoroughly done with facial hair and I certainly would never smoke. Although, I'm also not in my virile 20's or 30's anymore, either. In fact, a birthday hangs in the balance for me in less than 2 months. Thanks for reminding me. I'm so glad we had this chat.

I never cease to be amazed by how people don't give a ding dong dang that I am a podcaster. I might as well say I breathe and think a lot about food. Podcasters are a dime a dozen in today's world. But it's not like it's the easiest thing to do. For a podcast to sound half way decent you have to put some work into it: the structure of the show, the sound quality, your topics. You have to make it easily accessible to anyone. I think I have succeeded in doing that. I've made it accessible to anyone with a computer or smart phone. If you have neither, starting now I'll mail you each show on audio cassette. Just send me a stamped self addressed envelope! Is that you, 1979?

Yes, the rules in the Bay Area are strictly enforced, now and then. A rule about wineries is being enforced in PodCastro Valley and the whole case is a bit odd. I agree they shouldn't have people working for free at this local winery, but I also feel the labor board that swooped in to stop them were complete bullies and I have dealt with bully law enforcement in the Bay Area before. Meanwhile people fly through red lights all over town. Who's bullying those idiots? No one. Thus my rant endeth.

The ridiculous rules continue here in the East Bay. Particularly now on 580 or as I want to say it THE 580 because I'm an overly tan former So Cal dude. Signs saying one particular rule, like no littering or no parking, are obnoxiously placed at max 30 foot intervals along the road. Meanwhile, there's some wackadoo erecting ridiculous billboards on his premises next to THE 580 that tout how the Bay Area is being "globalized." They are the poorest written billboards, to boot. Even this blog is better written. Shock.

When I worked in Alabama, I worked at a radio station which was run by a man that I can only call quite simply a tyrant. We was hellbent on striking fear in all of his employees. He had no fear of the company that owned us, Cumulus, and he had distinct ideas on how managers, myself being one of them, needed to behave. He yelled at me often and somehow thought that I needed to yell at my small staff of 3 people. He called me an "amiable" and said I was too nice to people. Managers need to be hated by everyone, he said, though he would call that "respect." Well, I never respected him and I know few people that did. Don't run your companies like tyrants. You'll only be overthrown.

Rules here in the Bay Area are strict and stupid. So much for this place being liberal! I was fined 300 bucks for Basil the Boxer being off leash in an area that was clearly marked as okay for dogs being off leash. People are getting 300 dollar tickets for dropping people off at a BART station in Oakland. Where does it all lead? On a brighter note, I have a podcast where I can complain about this stuff. Why don't you complain with me? Together we can make the Bay Area liberal again.

That guy who started Family Guy is one rich guy. He's since started a reboot of Cosmos which has done very well and though he had a movie tank this year, that teddy bear movie did pretty well. Plus he drew the characters for his cartoon and voices them. His talents no no bounds. Oh, and he's pretty good looking. Isn't it nice when you know the pressures off? How can I possibly impress anyone when he's doing all the impressing and impressions that are needed on this earth? I'll go back to sticking my finger into mashed potatoes.

Being a tour guide for someone that's awesome is like taking a mini vacation myself. For three days I was showing a lovely German visitor around the Bay Area and actually discovered a couple things I didn't know about. So my advice? Be a tour guide. Just not one of those creepy smelly ones that say the same things over and over again until it sounds like verbal vomit. Unlike this show, which sounds like a leaky faucet of lucidity.

I'm getting a little tired of noisy vehicles. I live on a street where 2 buses going either way pass by at the beginning of each hour during the week. There is a wealth of big pickup truck driving people in PodCastro Valley that roar by and shake my windows constantly. If I'm standing outside trying to have a conversation I get drowned out by gas guzzling monstrosities. Enough about air pollution. I say let's combat noise pollution! Damn I'm old.

I must admit I've posted one or two pictures of myself on my podcast's website and my facebook (the name of which begs one to actually post their face from time to time). I have not had any facial hair for over a year now, and PEOPLE STILL ARE SURPRISED when they see I've shaved it all off. They have no excuse, they're my facebook friends. I had two tacos from Jack in the Box today. It was the last of a free gift certificates I got from going to a San Jose Earthquakes soccer game a couple weeks ago. They scored a couple times in the last part of the game so they give out these certificates when that happens. People are so dang strange. I'm walking Basil the Boxer today and he decides to lay down next to a nice lady who said hi and wanted to pet him. A guy walks out of the building she was sitting next to and the lady says, "Look at this sweet dog who's decided to lay down next to me." The man then looked like his family had just been killed in the the London Blitz by the Nazi's in 1940 (sorry, I've been watching lots of Foyle's War lately). What the hell was his problem?

Giving blood. I have not had the best experiences doing it. Today was an example of that. Of course, giving four vials may have had something to do with it. That and not having eaten in 12 hours. In any case I didn't pass out but came very close with all the sweating one would see Howie Mandel do in a room full of unwashed hands reaching out to shake.

I had a splendid time camping with Robert Owen Welsh of WELSH ON THE WORLD this past weekend. His parents are simply wonderful and we had fun letting the dogs run on the beach even though Bodega Bay has a strict "no dog on beach" policy. What's with all the rules, California? Are we teetering that close to chaos that we have to put up signs, signs, everywhere a sign? And fines, fines, oh my god the fines! 287 dollars as I have mentioned before for having a dog off leash here in the East Bay! I went to court and fought it and BOTH POLICE OFFICERS showed up to defend the ticket. Is that what we're all about California? Are we like Republicans after all? The party of "no". Are we the state of "no"?

Today we hear from Benita, the Disgruntled Fiddle Player, and the Brewmaster, PLUS it's the return of the feature INTO AN INTERVIEW where I'll speak with Mike from the SAN FRANCISCO band called THICK RED WINE!
