MIKE MATTHEWS interviews singer/songwriter IRENE PENA on "effizode" 24 of THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH!!!

This is Mike Matthews bringing you another show from the one place on Earth that is the LAST place on Earth!  We have some great music waiting for us and Chely Shoehart, our 18 year old giftshop supervisor, makes a return appearance!

This week we have a very talented singer/songwriter from Seattle named Irene Pena.  She and I have an interesting backstory.  No, she's not an ex or anything like that!  We used to work at the same crazy corporation together!  And I mean CRAZY!!!  I ended up lingering within that very lopsided business far longer than Irene did, and it was to my own peril!  I ended up moving my wife and I to another state and then I got let go after a year.  Um, any cab money for the ride home, guys?  Oh, yeah, and that was one big BOYS CLUB!  And no, not the cool 80's band that featured members from The Jets and had one hit song "I Remember Holding You."  No, this was a bunch of unregulated a-holes pardon my francais!

But after 2 years and several podcasts later, I don't miss that nutty company.  Yet thanks to social networks and the shrinking landscape in which we live, I was able to reconnect with Irene and hey!  She listens to the show!  So she's on this week.  Her self-penned tunes are awesome and you can hear them all right here!

So my last guest, Hey Rosetta!, might be getting me onto the radio.  There was someone affiliated with them who is letting stations know about this show beyond what PRX.org can do.  At some point we might be on the radio again!  If we just remain on the Internet forever, however, I don't mind because I know that listeners like you are loyal and I shall continue producing this show for you!  I am trying to get this show on the campus radio station of the community college I go to.  Of course, they don't respond to emails, even from student accounts supplied by the very college they work for, so I must track down the program director to ask if I can play this show on their airwaves.

But stronger than airwaves, please tell all your friends about this show.  We can build this thing!  It's a regular show that's out every week that promotes cool artists and gives you a fun audio alternative to all the other stuff.  Which brings me to other podcasts out there.  Really, it's all down to just radio and tv podcasts as well as big name celebrity podcasts.  Where are the in-home made podcasts?  Where are the not-big names?  I wanna hear something different!  I wanna hear a music show that's also got comedy and variety in it!  When I look up podcasts using the "music" tag, all I get is just music.  Shouldn't it have talking in it since it's called a podcast?  If it's just music, maybe it shouldn't be called a podcast.  Maybe it should be called an album!

Oh, and I'm really tired of turkey meat.  Just thought I'd say that.  The ground kind.  Used to think it was amazing.  Now, just tired o' it.

So as rain cascades down and various storm drains become backed up, and oh how I praise you precious storm drains!, here is effizode number 24...

Mike Matthews talks with the band Hey Rosetta! on THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH!

HERE'S effizode 23 of "THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH" with special guest HEY ROSETTA!

Hi, this is Mike Matthews hopping on the bus that takes us to THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH!  This week on EFFIZODE 23 we talk to a band out of Newfoundland called Hey Rosetta!  They recently played at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco and their little set was AMAZING!  We'll also let the Disgruntled Fiddle Player have a hand in interviewing new bands and I'll sing a very short song that hopefully doesn't get me booed off the stage.  It's all next on THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH!

So I've had no time for this show
My life's been go, go, go!
St. Patty's came and went
Had no boiled cabbage yet
I caught poison oak almost 2 weeks back
It's slowly disappearing but I'm just about to yack
I hope I don't have some flesh eating disease
Since I'm made of flesh I'm kind of not very pleased
Gonna dress you up with my love...
Next time I'm out in nature
I'll get to know the poisonous nomenclature!

I have been so busy with school lately and then this poison oak thing has had my wife and I going to the internet regularly.  Is it supposed to look like that?  Is it supposed to look that hideous?

I'm taking only 2 classes but the amount of work seems to escalate like walking down an expanding hall in your dreams!  It just keeps getting bigger and bigger.  Maybe I should quit this show all together?  Yes?  No?

Which means I still haven't done my taxes!  Here we are, less than a month away and I've gotta hop to it!  Or, I could wait till the last minute.  It's not like my CPA charges me any less for getting all the stuff in any earlier.  Make her work!  Oh...wait...she's pregnant.  I should be nice.  Sorry.

This week we talk with such an amazing band called Hey Rosetta! and an amazing singer/songwriter named Tim Baker.  The band's name actually comes from imagery that was conjured up whilst Tim thought about the importance of the Rosetta Stone.  When we saw them perform there were six people on stage and they all played with equal intensity to Tim's voice.  The young group of people that made up the audience seemed to really enjoy them!

Mike Interviews Singer/Songwriter Tristen Plus Craziness Ensues at THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH!

HERE'S effizode 22 of THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH by Mike Matthews!

Hi, this is Mike Matthews forcing my way into a bus and heading to THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH.  On this week's effizode we'll hear more of our interview with singer/songwriter Tristen as well as a sneak peak of a very special interview we'll have for our next show.  Plus Benita the Rodeo Queen and the Disgruntled Fiddle Player try to get enough signatures to repeal a California law.  We'll find out which one.  All that on THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH!

Tsunami and nuclear reactors
It's like a movie with bad actors
I once watched China Syndrome
now Japan has its own
I was involved in a business conference
with my school with college and high school students
Thanks to a smart kid in my group we got second place
that's because I sang a cool song from ace of base
I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes...
Oh and I got poison oak this week
My leg looks like rice crispiess

This is usually a section where I write a blog to go along with my show, but since I had a bunch of ideas on what to say yesterday and I neglected to write any of them down I have bupkiss today!  Seriously, I had had a cafe mocha from a coffeehouse across the street from my college and it had caffeine in it.  Since I usually go caffeine-free I was sssssssssssoaring all day and had loads of ideas of what to talk about on my show and what to write about on my blog.  I couldn't get to sleep last night because I was thinking of all that stuff!

Well, save for the first lines of the song above, I could not remember any of my ideas.  Luckily my wife's brother showed up today to save the show!

So in this show I announce who we will have next time.  I interviewed a band's lead singer and it was pretty funny except we had some technical issues since he was calling from his cellphone while traveling cross country (he wasn't driving simultaneously).  I need to edit the interview so it sounds cleaner and I will put it on the next show.  You'll hear one of their songs, though, this show to wet your appetite!

Oh!  I remember one of the ideas I had!  People driving and talking on cellphones without hand held devices!  I hate when people do that!  We dive into that subject on this show!

And there's some great music from The Echelon Effect and Cahas!  Listen to the show here...

Thanks for listening and remember to think good thoughts for those suffering such horrific losses in Japan.  I hope bright days are ahead!

Here's THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH effizode 21!!!

Hello!  This is Mike Matthews hopping on the bus and heading to this week's half-hour of happy, THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH!  We will talk to Chely Shoehart and Floyd the Floorman, find out why people on BART in the Bay Area are afraid to sit down, and we will catch up again with singer/songwriter Ben Wilkins.  So come with me into this always crowded cafe with interesting characters called THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH!

We also find out this week how gas prices will get and what some cities do to keep their bus passengers' minds off...well, being on a bus.  Plus we hear music from Reggie Regan, the Red Hook Ramblers, and Los Negretes.

It's great to have Ben Wilkins back on the show.  This is actually a piece of the interview we didn't get to air where he talks about how he approached his recording session with the full intent of keeping it as "natural" as possible.

We're up to "effizode" number 21!  As I write this my boxer, Basil, is really mad at me that I didn't take him for a walk yet.  He's shooting his "boxer guilt" at me.  Wow.  Now that's hard to shake!

Thank you for reading this little blog attached to this new podcast.  Comment on what you think of it down below.  Next week we'll hear some of the Tristen interview that we didn't get to and we'll talk to Benita the Rodeo Queen, the Disgruntled Fiddle Player, and the Brewmaster.  Lots of people with "the" in their names.
